Tofu challenge round 3!
Eat cubes of stinky tofu and you would be rewarded with a super-sized deep-fried chicken cutlet..
That was the tofu bet. The boys said they dare to taste and eat stinky tofu – a signature dish of Taiwan. I insisted the 2 samplings they had so far were not the real stuff. I added: The real chou tofu was much more pungent, way more disgusting in taste, than the ones we had come across in our Taipei tour.
Then we came across this 1 stall in Gong Guan night market..
Stall 3. Gong Guan night market on Day 5.
The stall was run by an aloof old couple and a guy. No patron was seen until we sat down. Their tofu had a sour taste. A student gal came eating beside us, then asked the hawkers if tofu has turned bad. Of course hawkers dismissed the idea ha! :-(
Stinkiness: 3 out of 5.
1 being the lowest while 5 being “stinkiest” or most pungent.
Taste: 1.
The worst-tasting one, the gang of 3 (yes, that was my wife and 2 nephews – I were a non-participant, hehe) all agreed.
Value: 0.5.
TWD40 worth of stinky cubes. No waiting needed. Sour-tasting tofu, weak salad and sauce among the 3 tofu tested thus far. Unfriendly old couple who managed faint smiles finally when they saw me taking snapshots of our group.. Maybe they had then realized we were tourists..
Bet status..
The tofu was not as stinky when bitten into, than when they were cooked and served. All of us agreed to this conclusion. Bad-tasting tofu which has already turned bad?
So neither myself nor the boys won in this tofu experience. Catch 1 last round before we give you the verdict!
Sniff out Round 4 – the verdict!
