“And if I can, then how leh?” *
Each of our 2 nephews answered, in uncanny synergy. “Then I’ll treat you each to a super-sized deep-fried chicken cutlet.” In a split second, I pondered and responded.

... We found our first stinky tofu at Shi Lin night market! ...
Tofu challenge
The bet was on! I had laid the challenge. So in the next 8 days touring Taipei, Taiwan, we checked out Taiwan’s infamous stinky tofu.
What will we find: stinkies or yummies? Who will win the bet: The greedy boys or uncle TA?
Here are the 4 samplings of stinky tofu we tasted. This is round 1..
Stall 1. Shi Lin night market on Day 3.
One stall in night market street (not the food centre) where mom and guy deep-fried woks of the cubes in front of stall. There was seated diners inside and crowds lined the stall. One of the most crowded street stalls we experienced in Taipei!
Stinkiness: 2 out of 5.
1 being the lowest while 5 being “stinkiest” or most pungent.
Taste: 4.
The best one, the 3 gluttons (my wife and 2 nephews) all agreed.
Value: 3.5.
Small portion for TWD45. Some waiting. Enjoy the aroma (but not for me) while you wait. Best-tasting tofu and salad among the rest.
Bet status..
The boys took their first mouthful of stinky tofu cubes, devoured them, and cheekily blew out nauseating breath. They thought they won the bet.
No, that was not “exactly” the “genuine” tofu I wanted them to try, I defended. We would try “the stinkier ones” in the days ahead, I told them. Too bad boys, I scored this round!
* A slight dose of explicit Singlish may be a staple here in TaipeiDreams stories. Primarily because I, TA, am sharing from the perspective as a Singaporean – where Singlish (our quirky English) grows from! Have your laughs! ;-)
